Many scientists agree that the level of CO2 in our atmosphere is getting dangerous, and that the consequent climate change effects are happening faster than anticipated. As more than 40% of the UK’s CO2 emissions result from the choices we make as individuals, we can take action on this global issue by reducing our own [...]

EVERYONE – unless you are Roman Abramovich – can empathise with how expensive getting goods from one place to another can be.

Courier companies seem to be able to charge whatever they like because they know they are indispensable.

Most of us, at some stage, have gone through the rigmarole of trawling the net for delivery companies, or signing our lives away with a man and van – at great expense to our wallets and time off work.

Angus Elphinstone, the founder of Anyvan.com, realised the potential for solving these quandries when he ran a white van delivery business from 2006 to earlier this year.

Elphinstone, 27, was fed up with sitting in traffic jams with an empty load on his way back from a job…and came up with a revolutionary idea to save customers money – and help save the planet.

“After one fruitless return journey too many, I thought to myself; how can I be linked up with customers in the towns and cities I am travelling to, so that I can deliver their goods for my return journey to make full use of my trip,” he explains.
The site uses a simple bidding system, like eBay

“Moreover, I was also inundated with calls from customers who needed something moved but could not afford to pay me as a one-off job.

“Instead, they asked me to get in touch with them the next time I was going to where they needed their item shipped so that they could give me a surplus contribution towards a journey I was making anyway.”

That is the essence of Anyvan.com – a web-based transport exchange where customers who need goods shipped around the UK and abroad are matched with transport providers travelling to their desired direction anyway, saving the customer money – up to a staggering 85 per cent in some cases.

It also generates more revenue for businesses making any type of delivery, from yachts to pianos to herds of cattle.

“We’ve had requests for all of these on our site,” says Elphinstone.

“Last week we had a customer who got his ferry and fuel back to Dublin paid for because he had space in his van to take someone’s garden furniture over to Ireland on his way back from a job in Liverpool.”
